ASSDA Technical Specialist Dr Graham Sussex at AusBuildLCA
ASSDA Technical Specialist Dr Graham Sussex will be addressing LCA delegates on the life cycle advantages of using stainless steel at the 1st Australian Conference on Life Cycle Assessment for Building and Construction (AusBuildLCA), being held at the Mercure Melbourne Treasury Gardens on 26 and 27 November. Hosted by the Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society (ALCAS), the national peak body for LCA professionals, the AusBuildLCA conference will explore the industry’s rating tools shift to LCA. The conference forms part of a three-conference series in Melbourne from 23-27 November 2015, which includes LCM Australia, the 9th Australian Conference on Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Management, and AgriFoodLCA, the 1st Australian Conference on Life Cycle Assessment for Agriculture and Food. The ALCAS Conference series will explore the application of life cycle approaches to drive innovation, identify business opportunities, reduce whole-of-life cost and build sustainability. "Stainless steel use worldwide has grown at more than 5% per annum since 1950 and while a substantial proportion is in the food industries, its durability, cheap life cycle cost, excellent environmental and sustainability properties and the variation of appearance it can present, has triggered substantial growth in the use of stainless steels in the architectural, building and construction industries. While including some of the many anecdotal reports, this paper will also cover substantial studies on energy and CO2 balances in stainless steel production, cost and durability comparisons with other materials in aggressive environments and measurements of the minimal release of pollutants when using stainless steels."
