CSIRO nutrition expert joins AgriFoodLCA

AgriFoodLCA announces CSIRO Nutrition and Health Research Director Professor Manny Noakes as a keynote speaker in Melbourne from 23rd November. Hosted by the Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society (ALCAS), the conference is the first Life Cycle Assessment Conference for Agriculture and Food.

Manny is a key opinion leader and trusted advisor in nutrition and health both nationally and internationally, particularly in the area of higher protein dietary patterns and weight management. She was instrumental in the development and release of five editions of the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, which launched in 2004 and has sold over one million copies in Australia. It has won several awards including the World Food Media Award for best health publication for 2007.

“For almost a decade, the Total Wellbeing Diet (TWD) has been one of Australia’s most popular approaches to weight loss and achieving a healthy lifestyle,” says Manny. “It’s a good wholesome eating pattern based on whole foods.”

The diet includes plenty of fruit and vegetables, unrefined and wholegrain, low-GI foods along with lean red meat, poultry and fish.

“The high satiety value of protein-rich meals keep the hunger pangs at bay for much longer and helps to maintain muscle mass which can fall away on a weight loss program,” she explains.

Invited to appear at the conference by organiser Tim Grant, Professor Noakes advice is in line with ALCAS’s aims to achieve a sustainable future.

“From a sustainability perspective, TWD promotes a lower carbon producing means of feeding a population with nutrients delivered through a healthy diet rather than through unsustainable high calorie food with little to no nutrients,” says Tim.

Manny agrees: “The production and distribution of junk foods account for 27 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions and only provide excess calories rather than nutrients so the best advice to contain emissions is not to overeat and to eat less junk food.”
