Large corporations and governments alike agree that keeping products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times it is one of the paths to a sustainable future. Making it happen requires rigorous knowledge of these materials, which is where LCA comes in. Barbara Nebel, thinkstep’s Managing Director Australia/New Zealand, will present how LCA can help to assess the environmental impact of a product when designed to be part of a circular solution at the ALCAS 2015 Conference Series.

thinkstep, a global player in sustainability performance management, is a bronze sponsor of LCM Australia 2015 and AusBuildLCA. Barbara will use real results from a building material study to show the potential impact on businesses when implementing circular solutions or business models, based on inputs in the production process, utility during use phase, destination after use and the efficiency of recycling.

Another interesting crossover is between LCA and natural capital accounting (NCA) in product design. Whilst the costs of pollution, ecosystem depletion and health impacts now exceed almost $3 trillion for global companies, these natural capital costs are still largely externalised and not tracked by companies. Linking NCA with LCA helps to quantify and therefore mitigate this risk. Again at LCM Australia 2015, Barbara will use the production of aluminium to show how to quantify these dependencies on natural capital and put a price against it. This type of accounting helps product designers and other decision makers choose more sustainably.

With more than 20 years’ experience, thinkstep enables companies to succeed sustainably through the use of proven and easy to use software, peer reviewed and annually updated data and professional services based on learnings and experience from every major industry. thinkstep’s GaBi Life Cycle Assessment software permits over 10,000 users to do precise sustainability calculations across all parts of the supply chain. This project is led by NSW DPI and partners with the CSIRO and Life Cycle Strategies.

“Using life cycle assessment, we can compare different practices options and improve the environmental impact of grain systems throughout Australia,” explains NSW DPI’s Manager of Climate Research and Development, Jason Crean.

In addition to the broad-acre grains studies, NSW DPI will be presenting two in depth studies on the cotton sector at AgriFoodLCA. The first explores different methods to calculate the climate change impact of cotton production in Australia, demonstrating the importance to use country specific values rather than global default values. This is important when considering future climate change actions and agreeing on priorities at important forums like the COP21 Climate Conference later this month in Paris. Here we looked at the environmental consequences of displacing animal feed and canola seed oil production, so policy makers and industry can see the full picture when they change production practices.

Research to understand the environmental impacts and benefits of different agriculture systems is essential to help the competitiveness of the agricultural in Australia, whilst sustainably safeguarding its future. Each one dedicated to working with manufacturers from within Australia and around the world in a Type 1 Eco-Label, Life Cycle Assessment environment.

Mathilde Vlieg, who joined GGT from the Netherlands, says she hopes that her presentation at AusBuildLCA - the first LCA conference for the Australian construction industry – will bring “Recognition for wood products being carbon sinks.”

Form, Fire, Fuel and Fate in Forest product EPDs says Mathilde was written together with Global GreenTag’s Certification Manager Shloka Ashar and Delwyn Jones of the Evah Institute, where Mathilde also serves as a Supply Chain and Life Cycle Analyst.

This particular paper, says Mathilde, who carries a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design and a Master of Science in Industrial Ecology, will be addressing a gap in current LCA global practice.

“At the moment LCA practitioners generally do not account stored carbon, ignoring the fact that every stored CO2 molecule means a CO2 molecule less in the air,” says Mathilde. Global GreenTag and Evah have for some years been including embedded carbon in pur product assessments and EPDs. Reflecting this Mathilde agrees stating: “we need to reconsider the carbon accounting in forestry products and understand the variables influencing the amount of carbon to account for.”

Global GreenTag’s CEO David Baggs says: “GreenTag has been leading the LCA industry using life cycle benefit analysis, including carbon sink calculations for more than 5 years now. There are many leading edge products, such as Laminex, Alpine and Dongwha New Zealand Limited that are demonstrable carbon sinks and the quantified embedded carbon of the products are available in every GreenTag certificate and product score card."

Dr Judy Luo will be representing Global GreenTag at the AgriFoodLCA conference in November. Judy who is originally from China, is GreenTag’s key liaison with Chinese companies and undertakes all GreenTag’s translation needs. She comes from a background in Landscape Architecture and her PhD is in the built environment and sustainability. Judy will be presenting a paper co-written with Mathilde and The Evah Institute’s Delwyn Jones, which delves into the apiary sector, titled: Apiary Services and Apis mellifera Coproducts.

“The paper considers the LCA of Honey Bee services and co-products (many of which are used in natural wood finishes, paints, beauty and personal products). We compare common agricultural and apiary practices in North America and Australasia,” says Judy, adding that "we have discovered how geographically distinct operations are potentially linked to colony collapse disorder (CCD) of the Honey Bee”.

“Given that CCD has a significant impact on agriculture and potentially over 70% of our food chain, the outcome of this paper provides practitioners with holistic LCA data plus an increased understanding about apiary processes to support agricultural strategies in order to reduce the rate of decline of Apis mellifera due to CCD,” says Judy.

Other papers that are being delivered under the affiliation of Global GreenTag and The Evah Institute are:

FLOORCOVERING LCA FOR ECOLABELLING IN AUSTRALIA

Co-authors: Shloka Ashar, David Baggs, Delwyn Jones, Mathilde Vlieg

SYNTHETIC FIBRE LCA FOR ECOLABELLING

Co-authors: Omar. On a local scale, [avniR] brings together industry, public authorities, experts and support agencies to develop collaborative projects around LCA, eco-design and environmental labeling. Their unique focus on helping SMEs take competitive advantage of Life Cycle Management quickly gained international attention and their bilingual conference series attracts 300 participants from more than 20 countries annually.

Jodie developed and managed European projects around Life Cycle Management worth more than eight million euros with partners across seven countries and has developed strategy and communication for the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative. She was recently elected to the board of the Forum for Sustainability through Life Cycle Innovation (FSLCI).

For the past two years, Jodie focused on how Life Cycle Management contributes to the circular economy; a clear priority area for Europe.

According to the European Commission, a circular economy aims to maintain the value of the materials and energy used in products in the value chain for the optimal duration, thus minimising waste and resource use. By preventing losses of value from materials flows, it creates economic opportunities and competitive advantages on a sustainable basis. Jodie coordinated the Northern French contribution to the European circular economy strategy, and represents the region in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s CE100 programme for Cities and Governments.

“The circular economy is a strategic framework to create value: environmental value from resources, but most importantly sustainable jobs and real growth opportunities for forward thinking businesses” explains Jodie. “Life Cycle Management is key to this transition, it is only when you really understand the impacts of your products way beyond the production facility, and how they interact with other parts of the economy that you can start to redesign the system.”

Last week, Jodie was invited to speak with Dame Ellen MacArthur, founder of the influential Ellen MacArthur Foundation at the “Circular Economy 100” acceleration workshop in Milan. “Sharing insights from a little known region in France with groundbreaking businesses such as IBM, ebay and IKEA, and government leaders such as Denmark and Scotland was both humbling and reassuring- we all have a part to play, we all have to develop solutions together and I can’t wait to meet with more Australians around these issues in Melbourne.”

Jodie will share her insights on the links between LCM and the Circular Economy and latest developments in this field in Europe at LCM Australia. She will also demonstrate how collaborative life cycle projects can add value to businesses, based on a case study of the beer industry in Northern France, and talk about how the upcoming Product Environmental Footprint method from the European Commission is being developed for thermal insulation materials in buildings. This new initiative goes beyond carbon footprint by incorporating, among others, water footprint and toxicity indicators.

To hear from Jodie book your tickets to AgriFoodLCA, LCM Australia 2015, AusBuildLCA or all three conferences at the Mercure Melbourne Treaury Gardens.

ASSDA Technical Specialist Dr Graham Sussex at AusBuildLCA

This article orginally appeared as 'ASSDA Technical Specialist Dr Graham Sussex speaking at the Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society Conference' in ASSDA News & Events ASSDA Technical Specialist Dr Graham Sussex will be addressing LCA delegates on the life cycle advantages of using stainless steel at the 1st Australian Conference on Life Cycle Assessment for Building and Construction (AusBuildLCA), being held at the Mercure Melbourne Treasury Gardens on 26 and 27 November.
